Okay, so I’m talking about this because… I’m terrible at it! I have only child syndrome ( yes I have a sister, but she’s 13 years older. So I grew up by myself!), so I’m used to getting my own way most of the time. But after being in a relationship for 4 years; I still hate compromising ( and so does he might I add). So let me tell you why I’m trying to refrain from being the queen of pettyville!
So after 4 years, you could say my relationship is pretty serious ( yes “pretty serious” is an understatement); but since we’re both only 20, you can guess that we’ve both changed and grown into very different individuals. This is where communication and compromise are key. But let’s be honest in the middle of an argument, I’m not trying to compromise, i’m trying to make you see that my way is clearly the better choice! Usually I would ignore the Angel on my shoulder telling me to maybe see things from his perspective, and go with the demon telling me to ” fight to the end, because its simply about the principle”. But now I see that you don’t need to fight EVERY battle. Whether it’s with your friend, boyfriend, family member etc, arguing over every little point is… Pointless. Count to ten, get to that happy place…Then start to think about how to solve the issue.
Just agree to disagree or try to find a happy medium. Now I’m not saying be a punk and let people influence your every move, that’s not cute; but quoting Dr.Phil sometimes you have to think “Do I want to be right, or do I want to be happy?” ( Yes sometimes I pick right, depending on my mood 🙂 ). But if you want any relationship to grow or to last, compromise is something we all have to learn.
To close, never compromise you as a person; your principles, beliefs or sense of self-worth, for anyone. But things like whose going to wash the dishes or turn the light off, really doesn’t need to turn into “why don’t you appreciate me” or worse, due to incessant arguing! It takes two to compromise so be the bigger person and make the first move! X
