The Darkest Berry
They say the darker the berry
The sweeter the juice
And when I laid eyes on you
My mouth watered at the thought
You see I have a sweet tooth
I crave for the darkest of fruits
And although I have tried temporary fixes
I will not be satisfied by anything less than you
Others may cast you aside
Claiming you’re spoiled or overripe
But I recognise that you are in your prime
To taste your fruit would be an honour of mine
I know your shade has been criminalised
Because of a system that demonizes your existence
But please understand that being the darkest fruit
Is a blessing & strengthens you in a resistance
You’re a piece of fruit from the garden of Eden
That the Lord has blessed me to see
You are more than a dark exterior
You are a symbol of natural beauty
You are rich and delicate
Your flavours are stronger than they know
I have admired you from afar
And have given you time to grow
So now please let me be nourished
They say the darker the berry
The sweeter the juice
I believe that to be true
I couldn’t imagine anything sweeter than you
